Akron's Historic Office Building Restored as Apartments
The Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund granted the City of Akron funds to restore Akron's historic Landmark Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The office building located in downtown Akron, contained asbestos in the roofing materials, and maintained several of its historic elements, besides minor alterations, such as new non-historic aluminum windows.
Architectural firm, Burgess and Niple, contracted Precision Environmental for asbestos abatement and selective demolition of the building. Akron plans to turn the 12-story downtown office building built in 1923 into loft apartments.
The majority of Precision's work involved asbestos abatement, and then selective demolition in some parts of the building. With more than 25 highly skilled abatement and demolition professionals, Precision is expected to finish their portion of the project this month.
Precision has been able to overcome the demands and challenges of the project, while approaching the end of the project and staying within the predicted budget and schedule. The team is also grateful to contribute to redeveloping an essential part of downtown Akron.
The proposed reuse for the newly renovated historic building will be 20 rental loft apartments and an upscale restaurant on the Main Street level. This is part of the city's redevelopment plan for Landmark and six other Main Street buildings to create entertainment and residential facilities, bringing more attractions, jobs and revenue to the city.
